Carburetor Setup and Jetting: Dial In Peak Performance
Your Zenoah engine has torque. Your hull has grip. But without dialed carburetor jetting, you’re leaving speed on the table. Wrong jets mean bogging at launch. Leaning out mid-run. Seizing at full throttle. Jetting isn’t guesswork. It’s math and testing. Enforcer setups run 40:1 JASO FD oil. Clean 91 octane. No ethanol. That’s your baseline.
Needle Settings: Start Conservative
Stock Walbro carb on G26. Low needle 1-1/4 turns out. High needle 1-3/8 turns. Idle screw 2 turns. These get you running. Not racing. Fire it up. Low throttle clean? Good. Mid-range stumble? Lean low needle 1/8 turn. Bog under load? Richen high 1/8. Always rich first. Lean is death.
Main Jet Selection: Pipe Dictates Size
Stock pipe, stock main jet #98. Short tuned pipe drops to #95. Long expansion pipe pulls #102. How do you know? Plug reads. Chop 5 seconds full throttle. Kill it. Pull plug. Tan electrode, brown insulator = perfect. White = lean, bigger jet. Black wet = rich, smaller jet. Repeat until right.
Pilot Jet: Idle and Transition
#38 pilot stock. Small hulls or short pipes lean to #35. Big monos or long pipes richen to #40. Symptoms: Low speed four-stroking = rich pilot. High idle won’t drop = lean pilot. Off-idle stumble = wrong pilot. Swap and test.
Air Density Changes Everything
Summer heat. High altitude. Humidity. All lean the mixture. Drop main 2 sizes for 2000ft elevation. Winter cold richens everything. Go up 2 sizes. Track temps. Exhaust gas temp 220-260C peak. Over 280C = lean. Under 200C = rich. Pyrometer doesn’t lie.
Common Jetting Killers
Dirty carb. Clogged screens. Old fuel. Ethanol gunk. Clean ultrasonic. Blow out passages. New gaskets. Re-jet after cleaning. Flex cable binding leans high needle. Free it or re-jet rich. Loose manifold leaks air. Tighten or re-jet.
